To Darlington for this interview with Sheers Limited, a 2.5m company already recognised and established within the water industry for its chemical dosing and disinfection expertise. Sheers are currently embarking on a further ambitious and promising foray into private industry sectors together with a number of joint venture projects with Chem Resist – an established supplier to Sheers, providing pumps for specific projects, bespoke thermoplastic spiral-wound tanks from 700l to 52m3 and complete systems with associated ancillary equipment as part of our "Total System Approach" philosophy…
Managing Director Roy Warren bought the company, formed in 1978, some twenty years ago and set about building a team to deliver high quality, safe, efficient and cost effective engineering solutions to customers.
Definitely bespoke, and certainly not always "off the shelf"…
Roy asserts there are still many suppliers in the market producing a range of standard product/service models then trying to make one fit the customers needs:-
"We come at the issue from the other end, and ask: ‘What is your problem?’ then we’ll either design and supply a bespoke optimum technical solution at the lowest whole life cost or suggest one of our portfolio of standard systems. Either way, we’re solving the problem. This can only be done by developing a thorough understanding of our customers’ needs and business requirements"
Plaudits
Though a relatively small company, Sheers have won plaudits from much larger client companies for their work in the development and implementation of policies and procedures that add value to the product package. Recent examples have included advice within the key areas of HS&E, Quality and Corporate & Social Responsibility.
Ian Ritchie, Director responsible for Health & Safety and Quality issues says Sheers’ suppliers are very much part of the mix:-
"Our collaborative approach with suppliers helps us deliver a co-ordinated and effective solution for our customers. Chem Resist is a prime example of this – a company which shares our problem-solving ethos and with whom we’ve worked for over five years."
"I’d describe Chem Resist as being very professional and obliging; they’re good at meeting our requirements, extremely responsive and will accelerate a project’s progress as and when we ask them to...."
"When they say they’re going to do something, they do it and that gives us a lot of confidence!"
EU directives
As Sheers expand their offering into the industrial market place, whilst continuing to develop their business with leading water companies like Northumbrian Water, Severn Trent Water, Anglian Water and Yorkshire Water, they see the flexibility issue as being particularly important. Paul Rogers, Business Development Manager, says that many companies faced with waste water treatment are realising the need to get professionals on board- spurred by ever more stringent EU directives:-
"Industrial and manufacturing sector companies, and the many thousands of companies who have any kind of waste water disposal requirement, obviously know that the days when effluent is simply tipped into the adjoining river are long gone but they’re increasingly asking for an experienced one-stop solution. Our extensive experience combined with Chem Resist’s expertise and flexibility allows us to offer exactly that!"
"This would include site surveys, process engineering, mechanical and electrical design, through project management, system integration, installation commissioning, service & maintenance and much more - all backed by regular and clearly defined key performance indicators at all stages."
Sheers claim credit for introducing Chem Resist to the Water Industry via a recommendation to Northumbrian Water some years ago and the relationship has developed from there. Coinciding with our visit was a very impressive chemical dosing system on its way to Northumbrian Water with one of our spiral-wound tanks (Northumbrian’s preferred choice) at the centre of the dosing skip.
It was interesting to see, too, the obvious attention to detail the Sheers team had in the equipment – carefully wiping every little mark away before shipment.
Good to see a company that takes such pride in its work!
